About this Legal Assistance Service (LAS):
Mackay Regional Community Legal Centre Inc. (MRCLC) was started by a group of committed locals in 2003 and continues to rely on its strong local community. It is a small service with three paid staff; two solicitors and one administrator who are supported by volunteer solicitors, barristers, a migration agent, social workers and others who provide legal information, advice, referrals and counseling.
The MRCLC provides services to the local government areas of Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac and delivers a monthly outreach service to Proserpine, Cannonvale (1 minute from Airlie Beach) and Bowen. The main towns in these regions are Bowen, Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Proserpine, Moranbah and Sarina. Outreach services provide legal advice and general information sessions on various areas of law, such as family law.
Recent accomplishments of the MRCLC include:
providing legal advice and assistance to marginalised clients;
providing 2-3 free legal advice evenings each month in Mackay with the assistance of volunteers;
providing legal appointments by telephone to clients in remote areas or who cannot access transport or have mobility issues.
Delivering a 'Workplace Rights for Teens' presentation to high school students in the Mackay, Whitsunday and Isaac Regional Council areas.
MRCLC offers PLT students a great opportunity to work in, understand and learn from lawyers practising in regional Australia. There are so many opportunities unique to working in regional Australia, such as outreach work and assisting in a wide variety of legal matters. Placing at MRCLC exposes PLT students to the experiences that can be gained by working with and learning from clients who have limited access to justice, the economically and socially disadvantaged, Indigenous Australians and people who are Culturally and Linguistically Diverse.
Mackay is a city on the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 970 kilometres north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is nicknamed the sugar capital of Australia because its region produces more than a third of Australia's cane sugar.
Mackay is also the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, enjoying a glorious year-round climate — perfect for snorkelling the reef, exploring the rainforests, sailing, fishing or just relaxing at one of Mackay’s many beaches.
