Graduate students interested in under taking a placement need to be prepared for the high temperatures that occur during the build up to the Wet season. They also have an understanding and interest in human rights law and have good listening skills.
About this Legal Assistance Service (LAS):
The Marninwarntikura Fitzroy Women’s Resource Centre is the auspice organisation for the Family Violence Prevention Legal Unit. The Centre overall takes a holistic approach to the issue of violence and provides a diverse range of programs along with legal advice, representation and community legal education within its service region.
The Centre’s DVD production Yajilarra, To Dream, shows strong Aboriginal women from Fitzroy communities who were able to speak up against the impacts of alcohol on their communities. Together they have been responsible for leading change in gaining alcohol restrictions in remote Australia. Yajilarra was presented at the 53rd Session of the UN Commission of the Status of Women (CSW) in New York in March 2009.
About Fitzroy Crossing:
The Centre is located in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, 4 1/2 hours drive from Broome. The town sits on the Fitzroy River, in the beautiful Kimberley Ranges. Fitzroy Crossing has a population of approximately 1500 people and is a service centre for more than thirty Aboriginal communities in the Fitzroy Valley. There are four main Aboriginal language groups in the area: Gooniyandi, Bunuba,Walmajarri and Wangkajungka.
In this part of Western Australia, the Dry season extends from May to October, when the days are warm and the nights are cool. The Wet season goes from December through to approximately March. During this period tropical storms transform the landscape from ochre to green.
