About Legal Aid Western Australia:
The first legal aid scheme in WA was started by the Law Society in the 1960's. It relied heavily on private lawyers working for free. In 1974 the Commonwealth Government set up the Australian Legal Aid Office (ALAO). ALAO provided legal aid on Commonwealth matters like family law and bankruptcy and also helped members of the armed forces and war veterans. In 1978 ALAO was replaced by the Legal Aid Commission of WA as we know it today. Legal Aid Commission of WA is funded by both the Commonwealth and State Governments.
Legal Aid Commission of WA aims to:
• help people to resolve their legal problems as soon as possible
• make it easier for people to get legal help especially if they belong to a disadvantaged group
• help people find alternatives to going to court
• give a high quality legal service.
