About this Legal Assistance Service (LAS):
Wheatbelt Community Legal Centre is based in Northam, Western Australia. Northam is 96 km from Perth and is part of the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. This region partially surrounds the Perth metropolitan area, extending north from Perth to the Mid West region, and east to the Goldfields-Esperance region.
This Community Legal Centre offers legal services to forty-two local government areas and provides outreach services to ten of these. These outreach services involve up to three days on the road combining client clinics with the delivery of community legal education.
The centre provides preliminary advice and information relating to most areas of law including family, civil, consumer, vehicle accidents, neighbourhood disputes, simple wills, enduring powers of attorney and probate and letters of administration. The three main areas of law that PLT students will gain exposure to are family law, civil law and tenancy law.
Exposure to family law at Wheatbelt Community Legal Centre encompasses issues of divorce, children's issues, property settlements, child support adoption and child protection. Aspects of civil law include: criminal injuries compensation, motor vehicle accidents, neighbourhood disputes, consumer issues, minor case claims, violence restraining orders and misconduct restraining orders, extraordinary drivers licences and wills and estates, guardianship and power of attorney issues,.
This placement offers a great ‘outdoorsy’ lifestyle with the best time of year to visit from March to November when the Wheatbelt comes alive with an array of events including regular market days, sporting contests, a variety of motor sporting events, agricultural shows and community fairs, field days, bush horse races, bands and other entertainment. Not to mention the natural attractions such as wildflowers in season, granite outcrops, reserves to explore and birds and fauna to observe from interpretive walking trails.
As with all our placements, the Wheatbelt CLC offers PLT students a great opportunity to work in, understand and learn from lawyers practising in regional Australia. There are so many opportunities unique to working in regional Australia, such as outreach work and court circuits. However, placing in Northam exposes PLT students to the experiences that can be gained by working with and learning from clients who have limited access to justice, may be low income earners and disadvantaged, may be Indigenous Australians and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse.
