The Gippsland Community Legal Service is looking for a candidate who primarily has a great attitude and an ability to work within a team. The applicant would have a strong interest in human rights and helping those who are vulnerable in our community. The Centre is looking for a dedicated student who will really value their experience. Additionally, successful applicants will be professional and have a proactive approach to tasks.
About this Legal Assistance Service (LAS):
The Gippsland Community Legal Service (GCLS) is supported and funded by the Attorney General’s Commonwealth Community Legal Services Program (CCLSP) and is co-located with other community services delivered by Anglicare Victoria. In accordance with the CCLSP this Community Legal Service aims to address the legal needs of disadvantaged community members by providing legal advice and advocacy, empowering individuals and groups through community education and to remove systemic injustice by advocating for law reform.
GCLS provides free community legal services to people who live, work or study in the Gippsland region (including BawBaw, Latrobe, Wellington, East Gippsland, South Gippsland and Bass Coast). The main office is situated in Morwell (Latrobe) and a smaller one in Bairnsdale (East Gippsland).
legal advice on all areas of law including: crime, family law, discrimination and equal opportunity, wills and estates, social security, going to court, employment, motor vehicle accidents, victims of crime assistance, family violence and freedom of information, limited crime.
community legal education;
law reform and policy work; and,
legal casework in very limited circumstances.
All of Gippsland Community Legal Service's work is done with a Human Rights advocacy approach, both within our service planning and delivery.
GCLS has also been committed to providing accessible legal services to prisoners in the Gippsland region. Specifically, GCLS has participated in the Transitional Assistance Program
Gippsland is a large rural region in Victoria, Australia. It begins immediately east of the suburbs of Melbourne and stretches to the New South Wales border, lying between the Great Dividing Range watershed to the north and Bass Strait to the south. The region is best known for its primary production such as mining, power generation and farming as well as its tourist destinations - Phillip Island, Wilsons Promontory, the Gippsland Lakes, Walhalla, the Baw Baw Plateau, and the Strzelecki Ranges.
